AZADIRACHTA INDICA LEAVES EXTRACT AS OINTMENT AGAINST STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS

Abstract

This quantitative research was done to determine the antibacterial property of Azadirachta indica leaves extract as ointment against Staphylococcus aureus. The researchers formulated an antibacterial ointment following the formula stated in the National Formulary which used paraffin, petrolatum, and the neem extract. The ointment was used to confirm the antibacterial potential found in neem leaves. To determine the antibacterial property of the ointment, the researchers used Agar Well Diffusion method. The experimental group employed only one concentration of 5% w/w ointment applying a generous amount of ointment to each of the trial. The positive control used a standard antibiotic ointment, Mupirocin (Bactroban) 2% w/w while the negative control received no manipulation. Statistical analysis using ANOVA explained the significant difference in the zones of inhibition between the neem ointment and the standard antibiotic, Mupirocin (Bactroban). The results of the study verified that Azadirachta indica has antibacterial capacity, although less susceptible, but still has a potential and this opens up to possibilities in the formulation of other dosage forms using neem extracts in higher concentrations that can be used in the treatment of many bacterial infections.
